  • What I wrote to the TSA

    To Whom It May Concern:

I would like to bring to your collective attention a matter of grave import. This incident occurred on Monday May 8, 2012 between the hours of 4:30-6 AM in Terminal 1 of the LAX airport.

These events and these people to be mentioned below are brought to your attention because this was a serious issue that was handled very poorly by two female employees employed by the TSA. I honestly believe that the TSA has an important job to do to safeguard the common citizen, but the events to be mentioned demean you all.

I humbly request appropriate action as soon as I finish explaining what happened and just how dearly this unnecessary, ugly, experience has cost me:

As I mentioned in the subject line; I did lose my wedding ring momentarily, but I received massive amounts of help from fellow passengers, four police officers, and all but two TSA employees and it was returned to me...in a manner of speaking.

On the morning of May 8th, at LAX between 4:30-6AM I went through TSA. The sign states that we must remove our belts, our shoes, our jackets, our change...in the interests of not making a nuisance of myself and risking any time the TSA would spend teaching me how to follow simple and clearly printed instructions, I removed all traces of metal. There is no addendum mentioning jewelry, so I reluctantly parted with these items as well and placed them in the gray security tray.

The only time I let my wedding ring out of my sight was to go through the X-ray machine. I rushed back to the tray. My necklace and pendant was just as I had left it, however my ring was no longer there. I frantically asked the ladies and gentlemen in line with me as well as the TSA agents to help me find it.

I know that these are tough financial times. I know that although I remain blessed in several ways, I am not by any means wealthy. I raised my voice as high as it would go without causing mass hysteria and I assured everyone in earshot that if, if they have seen my ring, I would be willing to sprint straight to the nearest ATM and drain my personal Savings to the value of that ring (~$3,000) but please, I begged, please return my token of my husband's esteem, which far exceeds any monetary value.

It was at this point that I was verbally abused by two employees of the TSA. I want it on record, and that record will be proven should any surveillance footage be available, I never accused anyone, nor did I even mention the word "steal." Still I heard the two ladies aforementioned asking within my earshot "Is she saying we stole it?" and then accusing me of being a "F**king Racist A** Bit**" The Hispanic TSA employee then joined another TSA employee whom is African American (and, whom had assisted me through the x-ray machine just moments before) joined in and accused me of being a racist (I am half Hispanic...). They used several ugly curse words and directly told me that I was being stupid and muttered that I needed to "get my S**t and leave."  The crowd and other TSA employees that formed around me were horrified on my behalf. I was emotionally distressed but I remained respectful to these ladies, imploring them to have a little empathy for me and my situation. The only response I got was "I wasn't talking to YOU, get outta my face!" I was quietly escorted to the police kiosk while the TSA women continued to insult me well within my earshot. Before I was able to completely walk away, one man employed with the TSA asked for my purse so that he could "scan it again" to be extra sure that "I had not simply placed the ring in a side pocket by mistake." I had not, but I agreed nonetheless. After the second scan he returned it to me saying that it my ring was not in the bag. I also volunteered at this time to be "pat down" to ensure that my ring was not on my person. It was not.

At the police kiosk and at four police officer's request, I laid out every item in my bags.  Thankfully, I found my ring in the front pocket of my carry-on bag where I keep my cell phone; it was definitely not where I had ever placed it as I have never scratched the screen and do everything in my power to avoid doing so.

I shakily boarded my first plane, flight 700 to Philadelphia. It was there that I began to experience a miscarriage. I was unaware that I was with child and this unfortunate ordeal not only left me emotionally fragile but hospitalized as of May 10th as well. I have since nearly recovered.

I would like this grievous error in conduct investigated and remedied. I have the contact information of several eyewitnesses, and if this is not suitably resolved, I will be contacting The United States Army Garrison Grafenwoehr legal offices for further counsel.

    Thank you for your time,

    Toni Sharay Logan

  • Is it fair? Is it the right thing to do?

I am not sad anymore about my recent loss.

    I AM INDIGNANT.

I contacted the Legal Services department here on base. I think what the TSA did was wrong, and I was put through hell for no reason. I am expecting a call back tomorrow. I don't want money, I want the dishonest people responsible to be brought to account. I have several witnesses and the whole thing was caught on surveillance...I hate to be mean, but damn it, sometimes I need to stand up for myself!
